Supervisor Development

Training is provided for all new PhD supervisors and supervisors new to the University. The training covers University regulations and expected standards in PhD supervision as well as guidance on good practice in supervision. Attendance to one of these sessions once every 3 years is compulsory for all academic staff who supervise, or wish to supervise, postgraduate research students. 
The workshops are led by Researcher Development Coordinator Davina Whitnall (Doctoral School) and colleagues are welcome to attend any session: 

UoS Supervisor Forums

The UoS Supervisor network is an opportunity to meet and discuss topics with other members of the supervisory community.

The UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE) runs a Postgraduate Research Supervisors Network and holds regular developmental sessions for supervisory staff. You can also access the UKCGE Good Supervisory Practice Framework here.

PhD Video Resources

Researchers have access to a range of PhD guidance videos through Blackboard including:
  • The Good Supervision
  • The Good Doctorate
  • The Good Viva
  • The UK Doctorate
These are available through Blackboard. Staff should select ‘Research’ and then ‘PhD Video Resources’. PGRs can access them through the Blackboard SPoRT PG Training Module.
